What years other than 2000 will be a direct replacement for the motor?

Thanks
Bill

My bet is none.

But, the basic engine is the same, so any of them can be used. You may have to use your accessories and intakes/manifolds, wire harness, etc. If you are going for a used engine it would be best to go for 2004 or later because they fixed the timing chain thing.

Explorers and Mountaneers got the 4.0l SOHC starting in 1997 and until 2010, but it was an option, some also had 4.0l OHV up until 2000
Rangers and Mazda B4000 got 4.0l SOHC in 2001 to 2011
Mustangs in 2005 to 2010

You will most likely be better off using your current upper intake and oil pan if possible.
This would make engine harness wiring fit and no lower fitment issues
