2000 3.0 auto with 217000 miles. at 40-50 mph seems to surge, hesitate, or something. it doesnt do this when still accelerating only when trying to stay at certain mph. if i lift off gas pedal it stops. if i keep accelerating it stops. any suggestions as to what this could be is appreciated.

EGR.

Try disconnecting the vacuum line that goes to the EGR valve itself.
Drive it with that valve disconnected and the line plugged.

If that works, you probably need a new DPFE, especially if your is metal (replacement will be plastic). Roughly $45 part, available everywhere.

You may also have carbon blocking the EGR ports or a bad silicone line to the DPFE.
Those lines are high temp so don't use anything else; Ford sells that tubing.

Yep, it sounds like the DPFE sensor might be bad, which is a common problem on the Ranger 3.0 engine.

thanks guys for the info. i will try it out this weekend and let u know if it worked.
