I can do anything with faith in God
Brothers of the Ranger Clan:Ive considered myself to be an almost good engine mechanic, but,I need some help here.Ok,,mileage is 124000.Ive had a misfire code on #6 for a couple months.Went straight to the basics, vacuum,no leaks, fuel supply, good, injectors aok.Plugs wires, fine.Heres the problem.Very low compression on 6.Actually poor compression in general,no 6 was only 20psi.I had no water in the oil,no oil in the water.Idle is terrible but clears and seems to be ok above 2000rpms.Heres what Ive attepted so far.I did alot even though nothing has jumped out and said Im broke.Cylinder head gaskets, heads dissasembled, valves looked ok,,hand lapped them changed seals.Very little carbon in the combustion chambers. When I say valves looked good, the seats looked good, valves werent discolored or damaged.I couldnt see any cracks in the heads.Did a Mr injector job on the injectors.THey atomize beautifully.Gaskets from there on up.I was told by a Ford mechanic that its the cam.Im having a hard time beleiving that.I checked the lift with a dial indicator while the lifters were out.Replaced both lifters on 6 to be safe. But the specs on the cam were good.I mean in the past you could run a v8 with a cam practically missing before it affected to the point of a miss.
Any suggestions

Please fix that paragraph. I tried to read it and starting getting a headache.

Proper punctuation please.

Thanks,
Jeremiah

The truth here is self evident! You had it apart.. The head and valves are Ok. The piston LOOKED GOOD!
So it's down to only one part... The cam lobe is worn and it cannot get enough fuel to make compression.
If it was other than that it would miss pretty good at idle.
I once bought a chevy that had a slight hesitation in the engine. I took it home and upon inspection both rockers were off of one cylinder... Someone had taken them all the way out to make that cylinder inert. I found the exhaust lobe to be worn almost smooth. But the intake lobe was pretty good. With both rockers on it it had a HUGE miss..
Anyway back to your ride.. Getcha a new cam and lifter set.

3.0 Misfire

Thanks Big Jim.
Ok maybe I got ahead of myself a little bit there.Im kinda anxious to solve it.The misfire is mainly at an idle and low rpms.Above 2000 it smooths out pretty good.At least maybe it feels ok above that since its just dragging that dead cylinder along for the ride.

Well that cylinder isn't "dead" it's just keepiing itself going and isn't making a single HP to help the rest of the engine. I'm betting there are more than that one that are badly worn. A new camshaft might turn that old lady on!

Thanks Big Jim!
Im thinking youre absolutely right.Darned 4-wheeler,gotta pull the engine to do it.Might as well roll my sleeves up.Im sure Im not the only one here.Id rather be sure about the diagnosis before I get the wallet out ya know? But,A fresh chain probably wont hurt the old gal a bit either.Hey,just to throw this out there. From the day I bought this beast,,had 29,000 on it.Switched it over to full synthetic.I was amazed at how clean the inside of this engine is.Pulled the valve covers off a 2.9 Bronco II that had built up so much wax that it had completely filled the cover,. Sold me on synthetic.
