Hello everyone!

I think I have a front wheel bearing or race that is bad. From 40 to 45 mph I get a humming sound coming from the front of my truck (I think its the front?)

I know the inner and outer bearings just fall out when the disk is removed and I know I can pound the race out with a brass bunch and hammer, but can i re-install a new race?

The counter person at Oreilly auto said I can't install a new race myself as I won't be able to get it in far enough or straight enough. He suggested I just buy a new rotor for $38 as they come with the races already installed.

Could I install a race myself? The rotor that is on the truck is in good shape, only 6 years or so old.

Thanks for the thoughts and comments!

Sure you can....use the drift to put it back in OR buy a bearing race installer set

Hammer it in till it bottoms and you're golden....its not rocket science. You can even take the old race, grind the outer diameter down and use that to pound the new one in.

For the price of the bearing vs a new rotor with the race already installed. I'd go with a new rotor. Be sure to pick up a new bearing as the one that is currently in the truck is most likely damaged if the race is buggered too. Do both sides while you're at it for good measure.

Not saying that a new race can't be put into the old rotor, but after 6 years that rotor has had a good life especially if it's a daily driver. If you're good with a punch or press then it can be done.

Thanks for the help everyone!

If I have to take the rotor off anyways I may as well have a try at replacing the races.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, when hammering the new races in I pound them all the way in until they hit the "recess" or lip in the rotor? Or do I just pound it in until it can go no more?

The races will bottom out and will not go any further.
