2 wheel drive , 4 wheel drive and low wheel drive

BlackBII's truck didn't come from the factory with a 4.0, though it might have a factory M5OD.

The Explorer M5OD I swapped into my Ranger (buh-bye FM146) has 2 switches.

no, i realize his engine isnt factory. i was assuming he swapped the trans. from his engine donor as well....but that might be incorrect.

but this is all a little off topic. the point is, ford wouldnt put a nuetral sensing switch on only SOME of the electric shift 4x4's. the switch must be for something else (an emissions thing perhaps, like you mentioned).

Assuming your electric shift still functions.... you need to already be in 4HI, then stop, shift to neutral or push in the clutch, then hope that it will shift when you hit the 4LO button...

as totalled said , if it is the old style pust putton , you have to have it in 4hi first , then you press 4lo , if you have the turn switch , put the vehivle in neutral , flip to 4hi , then 4 lo , it works alot smoother than just cranking it to 4lo , and remember , with an auto the trans has to be in neutral , with a manual you just have to depress the clutch , i know because on my 96 , the times i used 4lo , it was in first , i just pushed the clutch in , and mine only had one switch , i know because i had the trans out to replace the clutch

except for Jspafford's is a 2.9 and he says it has two (or maybe he hasnt checked HIS truck).

and BlackBII has a 4.0 and he only has one switch.

my trucks a 3.0 and only has one switch.

My transmission was originally a FM146, which had two different plugs. When I swapped in the M5OD I bought from AllanD the same two plugs from the M5OD plugged into the wiring from the original transmission.

Sorry to bust theproverbial bubble, but I've looked at mine.. Both before I took the old one out, while the harness was hanging there, and when I plugged in the new/used tranny from Allan.

And also know that it takes a few seconds to drop in, it's not instant like going into 4hi or 2hi...

Usually accompanied by a thud.

FYI, i wasnt doubting you...i was just thinking maybe you had been under a different RBV and figured yours was the same.

but either way, its not for the 4wd.
