well today i was driving home from hockey in the ranger and it smoked for a minute then the tranny ran out of oil. if i put more oil in it runs out every2 miles so im going to need to do some work and i think it will be up for sale after its fixed. anyways i need to find a 4x4 1988 ranger tranny for my 2.9L. are these the only trucks with these trannys ? i beleve theres a good mazda tranny but i dont no what it is or what it came out of that will bolt up to my truck. i dont no much about ford trannys so what model is this exactly and what parts trucks should i look for to get a new tranny ? thanks

well first off, stick or auto?

I don't think it was your tranny smoking. Especially if it was a stick. Might want to check the motor. It has got to be a huge leak to run out the fluid in that short of time.

Yeah is it a stick and if so do you know which one?

he has a auto, turbo modulator go bad?,had that once, smoked bad but tranny didn't go dry.it was on a chevy truck tho.

the tranny fits 88 and 89 ranger or 88 b2 only. electronics are different 87 back and shifter is different on the newer.

The a4ld does have a vacuum modulator which, if failed, could leak trans fluid into the engine causing it to smoke out the tailpipe. This sounds more like a trans line failure, spraying trans fluid onto the exhaust.
Fix the line, refill the fluid and be on your way.

its a auto, i was just looking at it and its blowing the oil out the trans, i think its where it bolts 2 the motor but i never crawled under neeth yet, also it is working fine now its just when it heats up like if i drive 30 miles and then it does this so im thinking it might be the transmision cooler ill pull it and replace it because it seems that the tranny is just over heating,
