I have a 1988 ranger 4x4.....it has a 2.9L in it obviously. Sometimes when i am idling it will just start idling like shit...then when i take off if i only hit the gas like a quarter or half way it is fine....But if i floor it it will misfire and not go but once i hit 4000 rpm and it shifts it will run fine until it hits like 3000 rpms it will break up again and then be fine after a while.....But it continuously does this it does not go away.......But sometimes the idle is also fine...It goofy but if anybody has any ideas shoot them my way. Thanks yall

Jeff

Have you cleaned or replaced the AIC??

Is it better when fully warmed up? or worse? or only happens when cold..meaning on start up?

check ground wires

AIC misfire

Where would the AIC be??????? Do you mean the IAC and no i have not done that yet.......But i think all the grounds are good well the ones i can get tooo. Other then that i have replaced plugs wires rotor cap and put a known good ignition module on it.

Woops... my bad!! ...yes IAC is what I ment to type! ~SORRY~

does it matter if it is cold or fully up to operating temp?

Looks like your ignition is up to parr

get some carb cleaner....remove the IAC...spray it down. repeat if it is really gunky.

the other thing is to make sure that all the vacuum ports in the upper intake are open. Sometimes they will carbon over too, creating runability problems, Oh yeah...as well as, the back side of the throttle plate. IF looks REAL nasty on the inside of the upper intake , (as you peek past the throttle plate, WOT, NOT running, you maybe time and effort ahead to remove the whole upper intake and decarbon it off the engine...in that way don't risk breaking loose a larger chunk of carbon build up and possibly damage a valve and or valve seat as you restart.

check also the vacuum lines for cracks/possible leaks....while running, spray carb cleaner...systematically... the whole upper intake where vacuum line enter & where bolted up to the lower intake & brake booster too...if it smoothes out as you cross area...focus in on that spot.

hope that helps....give ya something to check out anyway.
