Because the '86-'87 2.9L had a larger TB than later models, is the hp also greater than later models? If so, what is the difference in hp?:icon_confused:

It's only like a 2-3hp increase if that. That being said, me and a friend put an 86 throttle body on his 91, bolts right up, everythings the same except larger diameter. But we got the 86 TB from the junkyard for 5 bucks so it didn't hurt trying it out

Larger throttle bodies don't give you more hp.

2 or 3 hp? Something is wrong here! The performance I am getting is much more than that.

If you put a larger TB on your engine and did not get a great hp boost, I would think that you may have an air flow problem, or your sucking in to much hot air.
Many web sites selling larger TB's for more hp.

Larger TB's do give you more hp. You need to do more research. The larger TB sure gave my 2.9l a big boost.

You may "feel" a boost, because of the better response, but they don't add hp. Its still the same amount of air getting into the cylinders.

+1 The larger TB fools you, you don't have to push the pedal down as far as you used to to allow the same amount of air into the engine. The only way a larger TB would give you more hp is if the stock TB is allowing the engine to pull a vacuum at WOT. I know from experience that a 2.9 does not do this. The hp and torque numbers were the same during the 2.9's entire production.

Ziptie mod would be cheaper

Higher hp

I am not going to try and prove anything. I did my research, and the increase in hp was unmistakable. I think you need to read what Pat Kunz has stated in his article. Other places have also clearly stated that by enlarging the TB is a must if you are going to increase hp. The information is out there. Talk to me after you have done your research, until then, please don't waste my time.

Keeping in mind, larger TB's = higher hp. The original question: What is the hp of an '86-'87 2.9L engine with its larger TB (58mm)? From '88 on the TB was 53mm with an hp of 140.

I can't wait for Big Jim to find this thread...

ziptie mod is cheaper by far. This may be a shock to some of you but I had the 86-87 TB on my truck, I took it off and went with the later (smaller) one and noticed no difference whatsoever (I'm not easy on it by far either, I regularly shift @ 4500-5000 rpm and such, no complaints at all). I found the added benefit of it being easier to modulate the throttle during technical wheeling situations too.

IF you were doing internal engine mods that increased displacement, or adding forced induction, yes, it would be a good idea to go bigger. On an engine that draws under 300CFM pinging off rev limiter the difference would be little to none. Dyno sheet talks, all other bull$hit walks, bottom line.

I had the larger throttle body and the zip tie mod (which I did with a bent piece of sheet metal from an old VCR cover) and that truck had pep. I never drove an 88-92 2.9l Ranger though.

Drocks I found it!!!

First off Pat Kunz would be out of a job if he told the truth!! He makes his living as a SHILL for manufactors of JUNK!
Secondly then we get to added HP with a larger TB.. Yep! You CAN GET more HP with a larger TB!! But it WILL BE at higher rpm than the smaller one will allow the engine to get to.. So In order to make use of the ability of the larger TB you will have to have LOTS and LOTS of engine modifications... If no internal modifications are installed with the larger TB the engine will ONLY be worse or as powerful as it was with the smaller TB..
By ASSUMING the larger one will give more HP we must first ASSUME the smaller one is restricting the flow... which it IS NOT! So if the smaller one is PERFECT for the engine in question then a larger one can ONLY have less flow thru it than the engineers designed it for..
And NO you don't have to do research on the project! It should come to you naturally.. One should be able to digest this information and understand perfectly that the larger one is of NO HELP unless with additional modificatons internally to the engine and then the engine must be used at higher rpm to make use of a larger intake.

I'm not arguing HP numbers since I have no proof either way but, you are incorrect in this statement. The only rev limiter on a 2.9 is valve float, I've had mine to 6500 a few times. At that point the engine would be capable of drawing 333cfm.

If the size of the TB does not make a difference in hp, then why did they change the size in '88? More air = higher hp. I think I will need to go elsewhere to find the answer to my question. I am wasting my time here.
