im looking for a exhaust for my 92 2.9L ranger

how would a single glasspack routed out the side or back sound?

would a muffler sound better? like a flowmaster 40, 44?

im looking for a hearty rumble, call me a v8 wanna be but i hate ricers..

:headbang:

Glasspacks sound like a can of chilli on v6's & v8's. A chambered muffler would be your best option to go with. A original 40 would sound best on your 2.9. I have the original 40 on my 3.0 & it sounds good. I have heard the same on some 2.9's & older 4.0's and they sound good. I tried the 44 for a couple of weeks sometime ago and I did not like it. It may sound different on the 2.9.

No matter what muffler you put on it will only sound like a v8 at idle and low rpms & when it higher in speed it will still sound like a v6.

very true, good post. i love the sound borlas put out at idle. or maybe a magnaflow. im guessing the price for a muffler of that class is gonna be around a hundred right?

edit- couldnt find squat for borlas.. gonna look into a flowmaster delta 40 for right around a hundred bucks and exit it out the side../.

sound good?

I replaced the cat, put 2.5" (I think that's right, been awhile) pipe all the way, and put a delta 40 on my 2.9.

Leaving it that way (i.e. no tip on the end) sounded like rice city at higher rpms - I was embarrassed to drive it. Once I put a 3" (again, been awhile) tip on the end it sounded just like mtnrgr said it would - low rpm and idle sounded like a v8, but about around 2000 rpms and above sounded like a v6. It is fairly loud still - don't know how a regular 40 would sound if this is quiet.

I have gotten a few compliments on it though so it must sound pretty good, I'm still on the fence sometimes. Going up the parking garage ramp or in a tunnel makes it rumble a bit better.

But that's just my experience...

thanks sheep. i was really looking into a delta 40. how would you make 3 inch exit tubing work?

I would try the summit "race" muffler. Its like 30 bucks and sounds almost the same as a flowmaster 40 series. I had one on my 2.9 for a while, until I straight piped it. Sounded okay and not terribly loud.

I wouldnt do 3 inch exit tubing...my buddie did it on his 91 dakota 3.whatever v6, he has the thrush welded muffler an 3 inch exit pipe going out the back, but theres not low end torque....my 97 2.3 4 banger walks all over it lol and mine is straight piped into duals

But also I used to have an 86 2.9 5-speed Ranger, I had a cherry bomb glasspack with a 45 degree bend going out in front of the rear tire....some thinks it sounded ricey, but hey, drive a 2.3 ranger with the same setup, and you tell me what sounds better...cough2.9cough...lol I miss that truck....oh well my friend has it now

I wouldn't recommend 3" exits either. When I was doing mine the word was...hopefully still is...that 2.5" was the best bet for a 2.9, so that's what I ended up doing. All I did was get a tip (Summit has them pretty cheap) to modify the sound and get more what I was looking for.

i have a 2.8 with a glasspack and iv found that it hasnt gotten rice sounding until the very top of the rpm range ie when im a dip and overrev it a lil bit

if i could do all mine over again when the 2.9 was still living, i would have done 2.5 into my super 40's and 2.5 out instead of my 2.5 in and 3" out, the 3" made it sound like a pissed off bumblebee.

my 2.9 has a flowmaster 40 series with a single cat and at idle its a very deep tone, like a v8, but at higher R's its higher. around 3G it gets the loudest
