So the other night I was pulling onto the free way was bogging so hard and wouldn't make it passed 45mph in 2nd gear back firing alot... got in it this morning ran super cherry no bogging had all the power the little 2.9 will put out... then a few hours later I drove it to the store and same thing bogging hard wouldn't go and same back firing... pulled over popped the hood everything seemed fine started it back up and drove fine all the way home... anyone know what I should check...
thanks

Maby you got some crap fuel. Do all the easies first like check and wiggle power/ ground connections, check fuel pressure ( shrader valve on fuel rail), clean MAF sensor and EGR as applies, make sure a rat isnt squatting in your air cleaner, check timing, whats the temp. running?, buy it a pretty smelling air freshener and tell it you love it. The smart folks will be on in the morning so they should have some good advise for you.

Pull all the connectors apart and clean with electrical cleaner and use dielectric grease when putting them back together. Sand all the grounds all you can find metal to metal and look for and loose burnt or cracked burnt wires. Intermittent faults are almost allways wiring related. could be ignition switch related also?

yea the TFI I thought was bad do to the truck not running when it was hot... so I replaced it a few days ago. The 3 contact points that plug into the distributer wasn't a very tight fit... thinking the connection points in the distributer are maybe worn out or bad??

Yea ive read that thread on the TFI I reoplaced it a few days ago.. then ran into this new problem...

Have you pulled the codes?

Could be a temp control sensor, O2 sensor, intake air temp sensor.
Mine ran like crap intermittently for awhile then totally like crap.
Codes indicated Temp control & Air temp both out of range.

I replaced both, initial start up and warm up are back to normal now.
I haven't run it for any distance in case it isn't fixed and quits, (again).

I concurr with checking grounds and wiring connectors. The "dielectric grease" used originally turns to putty and doesn't work that well after 25 years. Most of the nagging intermittent problems I have experience with goes back to electrical problems of bad contacts, bad or missing grounds or loose or burnt contacts.

Good luck.

no I have not pulled the codes... nit really sure how to yet need to do some more reading on that as well... lol but I'm thinking if it's something such as temp or o2 it would have this problem all the time right? I'm thinking the ignition coil... maybe just has a bad connection or not enough power at some times... also checked cap and rotor, the rotor wasn't in the best shape... but all these don't really make since to me why at random times it runs like Carl then 80% of the time it's fine...
thanks

Nope it will give you different issues at different times for what the sensor does.
