I think I have a cracked head on this 87 ranger. (2.9 v6 4x4)
I have not tore into the motor yet, but was just checking around on prices just incase.
Online prices are all over the place, and most dont list if it is the newer casting heads, or old rebuilt heads.
I called a few local engine shops and only one said they can get heads ( or do any work for a 2.9) all the others basically said its not worth their time and suggested I scrap the truck.
The one said they can order brand new thick casing heads and then put all new valves, springs, etc....in them. Bolt on ready to go for $285 each.

So for 2 heads after taxes is a tad over $600. ( then add in all the other costs of gaskets etc....)
It seems a little expensive to me.....but is it?

Curious how much a long block is..LOL

Time for a 4.0 swap :)

I think sticking a 4.0 in this first gen is more work than I care to tackle right now.
I was reading on it in the tech section, and granted I diden't read to indepth but looks like alot of wiring changes in the dash.

Find an Explorer and swap the dash with it. Not a big deal. It just sounds intimidating.

makes me wish I would have bought the world products heads I seen on fbook a while back the went for 150 and never used

update:
went out and pulled a valvecover off. Small thin casting heads. Inside of valve cover was covered with "snot" had antifreeze covering the rockers..etc...
Yea, its not pretty.
So looks like I will be yanking the motor and rebuilding it myself, or swaping it out with something. 4.0...5.0... not sure yet.
been looking at repo auctions and tow company auctions for a cheap donor vehicle.
