Please Help

Drove my 1986 2.9 Ranger all the way from Windsor Canada to North Texas, ran Great!!
Got here and are having problems with engine dying at low idle, Trying to restart puffs out black smoke like crazy, when it starts it runs rough until it cleans out and then is fine until the next failure. Started out every couple of days would die once, now it is almost every time you light it up (if it will start) you can be sure you wont make it more than afew miles. I have changed the main fuel pump ( truck has duel tanks ) and have checked the fuel injectors for power while in "wont start Mode" The node light shows power and there is plenty of fuel pressure. Have spark and still she will not light. please help, this is a really clean arizona truck and I and I dont want to give up on her. it has been at a shop up here for two months and they havent figured it out, I am turning to the experts, ANY SUGGESTIONS!!!!

test your TFI module, pull codes.

I'm not a pro like a lot of the other guys on this site but I'd check the fuel pressure regulator. Sounds like it's letting gas past the diaphragm and into the intake. Pull the vacuum hose off the regulator and see if it's wet or has gas in it. If it does, the regulator is bad.

Thanks guys,
Will try all of this,
Getting truck back from shop tomorrow, have to tow it home, Mechanic was let go, (go figure!!)
I will keep you all informed as I go

Really appreciate your help
Don't know why I didn't think of this sooner!!
Pat

Sounds like a fuel pressure regulator gone bad to me also. I just replaced the FPR on my 86 BII on Friday. It would flood out when idling and not run very well at higher rpm's. I've replaced bad FPR's on my 88 BII and relatives 88 Ranger last fall. It seems to be a common problem. All 3 had fuel in the vacuum line. My 86 was by far the worst running from it.

Where at in North Texas? Might be able to get together and help you out.

Pat,
PM me a day other then Monday that is good for you and we will get together and see what we can find out. Also send the address to put into the gps
Doug

Pat,
We need to get together again this week end and get after that truck. Give me a call so we can set up a time. Did you ever get codes from it. I will bring the TFI that I had tested and we will work from there.
Have you got the house finished yet?
Doug

My FPR was bad and it didn't leak any fuel. It also worked great when the shop tried to diagnose the problem, they let it run and run, drove it...no problems,15 minutes later on the way home it messed up again. Thankfully it did mess up when I checked the pressure with my cousins tester. I got one from Rockauto.com for 35 bucks I think it was. It got here quick and was WAY cheaper than one from the area parts stores.

Thats the way those damn thing are. Need to replace mine. It dies now and then, but its just been too hot. Funny thing is, it doesn't ever die when I use the a/c so I am not in a hurry to replace it.

Glad you got it figured out. Hope you didn't have to pay the shop a lot for all the work they didn't do.

Great man. Because my truck has always acted like this when it's 1st started. Now it has gotten more intense..Heavy black smoke but no sign of a bad FPR. Tonight I'll be using a buddy's fuel pressure gauge to finally catch it in the act!

BTW...Rockauto is awesome! I'll be looking there as well...
