so my dad has a 95 explorer with the 4.0 and automatic, he is looking at swapping that motor into like a 87 or 88 bronco II that had the 2.9l. the bronco II has an automatic. would there be any chance that the transmissions in the bronco would bolt up to the 4.0 as the tranny in the explorer is about to go.

It will IIRC, but won't hold up to the power for long, because when Ford brought out the 4.0, they beefed up the A4LD to withstand the added power

well the explorer tranny is about to take a dump and the 4.0 has like 300000 on it but still seems to run ok. and the rest of the explorer is just waiting to fall apart. how exactly did they beef it up was it just internal or was it case and all.

it should bolt up with the right flywheel/tq converter combo, but the electricals may be an issue. If you're bringing the ECU and harness with the 4.0 over to the 2.9, the ECU will probably throw a code and a CEL because it won't see the older, non-electronically controlled transmission. With the electricals off of a 4.0 that had been used with a 5 speed, you'd be in the clear...besides the A4LD being a not-particularly-strong transmission.
