hi all. was wondering if anyone had ever swapped in a 4.0 in place of a 2.9. i have a 5 speed but am not sure if it will bolt up to the 4.0 block. also what do i need as far as the computer and such. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lots of people have. Check the tech library.

Its pretty common. Should bold up to the trans, but you'd be better to find a 4.0 trans, particularly an M5OD. Otherwise you are liable to kill your trans pretty quick.

You will need pretty much everything from the donor truck. Engine, harness, computer, dash.

Do you really need the dash? Isn't it the same?

89+ you don't need the dash. The 90+ 4.0 and 2.9 dash harnesses were the same.

He has an 87. The older 2.9 dash harness doesn't work right. The pins are different and the plugs don't match to just swap the harness. The dash is pretty bolt in as a whole unit though.

Ah ok. DIdn't even see his was an 87.
