I'm looking to put a 4.0L in place of a miled out 2.9L....does anyone know what all has to be done?

there really isnt to much to the process... you can find all the instructions that you will need on the tech lib.
putting in the engine is easy the wiring is nto bad whats so ever so dont let it get to you, just remember your grounds cables.
if your getting the engine from an explorer, the first gens are easier to do the swap with. but if your going to be hard on the engine consider going with a little newer engine. i play in the mudd and just blew mine up.. but i still got out... lol oh and get a repair manual for both your truck and doner... good luck, and if you need help just ask here... cyaz

Awesome links.... I've decided to do the swap simply because my '91 2.9 5spd is starting to tick me off. I suspect a cracked head although there's no lack of performance to the engine, she's still pretty peppy running 34's. I smell fuel in the overflow tank as well as the bubbling in it when running and minor coolant loss from somewhere up near where the tranny and engine mate. I did a pressure test on the radiator with it running, and it dropped slowly, but held steady when not running.

Anyways, I found a running donor '91 exploder with new clutch in the 5spd, and offered the guy $500 for it, he came back with an offer of $650 but exploders are a dime a dozen around here so I'll see if he'll cave in to my offer. From what I've read this should be a fairly straight forward swap especially considering both trucks are the same vintage and have standard trannies.

Any last words of advice before I tear into the little byatch? (besides EVTM as I have access to all sorts of manuals at my friends garage)
