my 2.9 has ticked from the day i got it. sometimes it wont. especially after i change the oil. is it the lifters or the injectors? ive heard to have my oil pressure checked and add no-smoke additives, but how do i really stop this ticking?

its not the injector, and there is no real way i have ever seen to eliminate the ticking, every 2.9 ever will tick at some point....but it is a lifter tick

Lifter tick, pretty normal for 2.9s. Mine does it for the first 30 seconds or so when cold, then stops, unless I REALLY romp on it when its cold it'll tick untill I shut it off, this RARELY happens however. Fathers 2.9 comes and goes randomly like yours. It cause by worn cam bearings, air in the lifters and worn pushrods/rockers.

ya mine just started ticking to about 4 weeks ago when i put on my 33" tires, hyper lud works pretty good on worn motors, you can find it a shmucks,i used it in my old ranger and it works. or you can adjust your lifters its a pretty easy job.

It doesn't matter if you replace everything and adjust everyday for the rest of your life(or the engines). If you own a cologne engine it is gonna tick. Period. That is all there is to it. Yes it may go for days, months or even years(highly unlikely) but, eventually it will tick. The tick isn't nessesarily harmful, I've seen them run that way for years. It is just something you have to live with.

Check your rocker arm shafts it might be clogged with dried sludge resricting oil flow. With the valve covers off see if their is any dry spots around the rocker arms.(with engine at idle) A good amount of oil should be flowing out of the rocker arm shafts on to the rockers arms.
The theory of having worn out cam bearings causing the ticking is bull shit! That is why no one can solve their ticking problems. The reason if you do have worn cam bearings is because of improper oil flow.
I solved my ticking problems years ago. It can be solved!!!
Don't use Fram oil filters it also restricts oil flow. Use Motorcraft ones.

Run diesel motor oil in it. Most of it is 15w-40 but the Wally-Mart near me is carrying Shell Rotella in 10w-30 now. It is perfectly fine to use it in a gas engine.

what will diesel oil do??? I got it bad I would just like to inprove it any other hints?? I tried Lucas Oil Stabalizer but it did nothing

Tick, tick, ticking away

Be careful of the diesel oil; a 2.9 is easily sludged up. I run 5W-30 in mine and get good results. Thinner oil in all the right places is a better lubricated engine than thick heavy duty oil clinging to the walls of the engine.

I was a bit dubious of this when my mechanic first told me, but it has worked for me so far: pour a capful or two of brake fluid in with the oil. I suspect that it desolves the oil clot that is keeping the needed oil out of the lifter.
