i have an 88' XLT SuperCab with a 2.9 i recently put a new radiator in it and a new temp. sender for the gauge and it kept reading that it was overheating so i put that royal purple purple ice in it and it still did it so i got a mechanical gauge and its running around 160 F to 175 F i put a 180 thermostat in it when i did the radiator. is this running to cold? i also found im getting about 12 mpg so i think i should put the 190 thermostat back in. what do you think? thanks for the input.

I would put the 190' t-stat back in, 160 is a little low....

try a new radiator cap too...purhaps it isn't building enough pressure.

are you short driving it?? <5-10miles and shutting it off?

what is the outside temp where you are at?? is it near 0*?? this also plays a part.

I changed the temp sensor to the engine computer (emc) and helped some on the MPG's

right now where I'm at...it's bitter cold, near the 0*, and with short driving times....2 strikes for improving MPG's, right now.

Agreed the 190* thermostate couldn't hurt things either

My truck was doing the same thing and it was the voltage regulator in the dash that was causing the gauge to read wrong. I put in a good electric temp gauge and it is all good. I run a 180 deg thermostat in the summer months here as most of the places we go wheeling it gets pretty hot. I then put the 190 back in for the winter months for better heater output.
