my 2.9 makes almost a rod noise but when you put pressure on it like goin down the road it wont make a noise until you let of the gas and its at 2500 rpms or more.

hope this helps

inspect your hydraulic lifters and pushrods my ranger knocked all the time and it was my lifters also do you have plenty of oil pressure at idle? or does pressure increase with engine rpm?

Thats usually when you'll hear a rod knock.

If the bearings are wore to the point where the crank and rod are just a little loose, then when you have torque on the crank its holding everything togther, but when you let off itlooses that torque and lets stuff slop.....see what im saying?

Drop the pan and change the bearings....before it chews up the crank.

later,
Dustin
