2.9 motor and trans... need some help

ok so im new to the whole truck seen... i know just about any thing you would want on atvs...

so heres my problem...
i got a 84 ford ranger from a kid at my school... i paid 500 bucks for it, its in reall good shape. theres a 7 foot box and only rusted out above the wheel wells, the doors are rusted at the bottoms and the front wells are just starting to rust.

not the truck body wise is in good shape.

a guy came out to look at it( i was tryin to sell it) and said it was blowing oil... and i was like what? :icon_confused: hes like one of the rings on your piston broke off or you have realy low compression in on and it blows oil aound it then goes in the valve cover and then goes through the breather tube and goes through the carb... i was like oh... ok and he said it was junk...

so i hear that the 2.9 parts were super cheap... i have a carbbed 2.8 with a 4 sp. with OD tranny(stick) its a 4x4 and a really nice little truck...

how hard is it gonna be to swap out the motor? i rebuild 250r motors in atvs and all that stuff so this couldnt be that much harder could it?
 
Tranny and motor mounts will bolt right in.

The EFI wireing will be a pain in the ass though.

So this guy just looked at it, and decided the engine has broken rings and far to much blow-by?

Seems a bit odd. Before we throw the cart away with the horse? How about some basic diagnostic work and see what's going on. Unless he compression tested the engine? Heck, I'd be the first one to replace the PCV valve and see if the problem went away. Unless he removed the oil filler cap, and it was belching a huge amount of smoke/fumes/nasty stuff? I'd start with a compression test, which will lend to the condition of the sealing rings.

How did he determine all of this?

Damn, I would def do my own tests before believing some guy who just looked at it. Check your breather cap and PCV valve. They are cheap parts and easy as hell to install.
 
Don't believe anything someone there to buy your vehicle tells you. They are just trying to knock down the price. If you want to know the condition of the engine, run some tests such as compression on it or take it to a good mechanic for a basic evaluation.:icon_cheers:
 
man i havnt on here for a long time... but he just pulled the oil filler cap off and the truck was running and there was smoke comming out... i paid 500 for it and there was a ton of oil that would collect in the intake... it would be a little pool... so i pulled that breather tube and let it sit on the side... and anyways he pulled it off and was like oh your rings are bad... i was like huh? what are you talkin about you see all this smoke its from bad rings... i was like oh... well ok... and then they didnt say anything and then i was like well how much is it worth.. and hes like oh 300 because it will take 1200 to get it running... and i was like ok im not that stupid.. if you can tell me the rings are bad you obvoulsy can take this motor apart or find a good one and swap it out... and hes like oh well i dont know.. my offer is 300... i was like well im sorry but its not leavin here unless i have 500... (i put 200 in it)


so now a few things have chaged... i got a 93 4.0 and i still have this truck... i started to get in the off road racing and im gonna convert the 84 in to a off road race truck and i would like to put a 302 in to it... or another older carbed motor like that... i would also use a 300...i'll get some pics... if worst comes to worst i was just gonna pull this motor and rebuild it and paint it and all that...
 
yeah but now i have another project mabey... a friend of mine who knows nothing about motors didnt ever chage the timing belt on his eclipse so the belt broke and i can get all the parts and fix it for under 500 i think not including the shipping... and i think i could get it for 1700 i hope... ots a 2000 with 155K on it... the clutch is messed up too... some times it works and some time it doesnt... im not really sure what im gonna do.. one way or another i will have the 84...im not sure what motor im gonna put in it though...
