could be a couple of things.

best to get the codes 1st though... the can be helpful in repairing and save $$ in replaced parts. These older unit won't neccessarly put a Check Engine Light (CEL) on the dash if there is a problem like newer ones.

Does it get up to full operating temp?

BUT....from your discription it sounds like the AIC
you can clean the AIC -Air Idle Control-, located on the passagner side of the upper intake, about mid way. remove and decarbon with carb cleaner. may have to do this a couple of times. there is a plunger inside that gets gunked up with carbon and won't actuate correctly.

also...remove the ducting from the air filter to the throttle body. Tip the throttle plate and check if there is carbon built up on the back side of the throttle plate. if there is a acumulation clean it.

NOW , back to where the AIC was attached to the Upper Intake...note if there is carbon starting to crust over the hole/port, looking really nasty. If it is, you maybe time and effort ahead to remove the whole upper intake and clean it really well. In this way you won't run the risk of shaking a chunk of the carbon loose and cause more damage or issues when you fire it up again.
