2.9 help

It's possible that a head might be cracked, make sure to have the head magnafluxed if you remove it. It's very possible to screw up a head gasket job, make sure to use new head bolts. Triple check that the gasket is on correctly, follow the prodecure for installing with a good torque wrench to a tee (slightly oil the threads on the head bolts to prevent friction from fudging the wrench readings, it's recommended that you run a tap through the threads to clean up before installing), and you should be okay.

How does the motor run if you pull the SPOUT? Do you have a CEL present?

When the SPOUT is open, the ICM will use the PIP signal from the distributor to fire the coil at a fixed rate (instead of allowing the PCM to adjust). The pick up in the distributor creates a digital PIP signal, which the ICM and PCM use to determine engine RPM and engine location. Is there a good known distributor that you could swap up with? Sounds like a bad pickup, but it could also be the TACH - or a flyback voltage that's created from the primary side of the coil that's sent back to the PCM after the coil fires. I wouldn't keep an intermittent wiring problem, or bad connection out of mind... Some of that TFI-IV gets kind of indepth, I would suggest doing some reading, I am still learning...
