Greetings. I have a 1988 Ranger with a new motor and both fuel pumps replaced. About once every week the motor will die on me. I shut the ignition off, wait about 20 seconds or so, and she fires back up like nothing ever happened.

Did I miss something when we put the new motor in? Thank you for any help.:icon_thumby:

Could be several things...more info please

When it Does it shut off???~
~does it happen going down the road 50-60mph, or wait until your slowing for a stop sign??

~ does it get worse in running...starts out fine, then starts to miss & struggle to run & eventually die, or just shut off?

~does it happen when it is cold only,(shortly after startup)?? Or after it has been driven a while??

The issue is caused by the ignition module, you will need a replacement and a special tool to get at the bolts unless you want to pull the distributor.

Fixed.

Could be ANYTHING related to the wiring of the TFI......or the fuel pumps OR the PCM's power distribution.

It could even be fuel delivery.

Thanks for the tips fellas. As far as details, the motor dies as if I just shut the ignition off (no sputtering). It only dies on me when she is warmed up and running around town. Never down the interstate. Funny thing is that module on the distributor was new when I dropped the new motor in. Its an aftermarket Accel product. That fuel pump cutoff switch under the carpet on the pass side does not exist though, and I have been lazy on replacing it. I simply spliced the wires together for a quick fix.

I had a similar problem and it ended up being corroded contacts inside of the plug that connects to the coil (but I never had to wait 20 seconds to restart). That may not be the problem by any means, but I found it by just grabbing electrical connectors to see if the truck would die. (It did, and was repeatable)

Another eletrical problem I had, the passenger door would shut and the truck would die. But the good thing was that at least I had some general idea of where the problem was and I could repeat it.

I would also be curious if they used heat transferring compound between the TFI and distributor, but you would start with more simplistic things first.

I wonder if it could have threw a code right before it died, have you seen any CELs while driving, or pulled codes?

Pete

Well ...gotta agree that this hints of the TFI....I too had a new Accel TFI, didn't make 50miles...went &had it tested ...was bad on the 1st test. Couple of others took several testings before they would show bad. Later ended up replaceing the pick-up coil too.

Not to say that a bad connection couldn't be the culprit too.
