Afternoon all.

Simple question, Export 2.9 in my 88 Ranger, there are 2 "pointers" right (passengers side) just above the crankshaft pulley (damper).

Lower one has a "sight hole" in it, other is a bar with an angle cut at the damper end.

Damper has a 3/16" "notch" cut in it, no other marks or "stuff"

which is which, AND, where would be 10 BTDC ? would this be right or left (when looking from the grill) of the marker (assuming the angle cut bar is TDC) I would also assume that right of the bar would be BTDC as the crank rotates CW (again looking from the grill)

I only have a "basic timing light" (No dials just on/off) and there is NO Tin guage with degree marks.

Even have a spare motor, bars are the same on it as well......

Hmmmm? I've always assumed that the pointy pointer [top in the pic] is the one to look at because it's the one that would give the most accurate indication. Never have asked or researched this tho. Good question.

Ok, OK, I am Canadian, and I'm stupid !

I found the "real" timing marks (under a tone of grime), AND, they are almost 160 degrees (the other side) of what I "thought" was the timing mark... (the big thick cut) in the damper.

So it turns out that this engine was so far out of time it is amazing that it ran

Talk about "killer spark" !

Question answered.

Glad you found your marks. Floored is right, the pointy one is the one you look at.
