Has anyone swapped a 2.9 with a 3.0? I cant find a good used 2.9 for my 88 Ranger XLT 4X4, but I found a complete 93 XLT 4X4 wrecked with a 3.0. I am pretty mechanical but the thing has me stumped. Its running on 60 pounds compression, dont use any oil or coolant. Could it be head gaskets? and warped heads?

you can do it but there are better, easier swaps out there, namely the 4.0

Cost of rebuild, time/$$$

I don't know where you live but they are a dime a dozen here in the PNW. I have at least 2 extra from previous and current builds.

You can do a honest good rebuild, if the heads aren't cracked for as little as the cost of bad parts, plus consider a new oil pump, oil pump pick up and water pump, depending on what failed in your engine.

Is the 2.9l or the 3.0l running on 60lbs without fluid loss?

I would rebuild the 2.9l; I have to admit, the 3.0l is very good engine and is very economic to drive (also converts very easily to natural gas).

Good luck.
