How easy is it to swap a 4.0 litre into an 86 ranger and what is the best place to get the most for my money

Basically the short of it- It will bolt up to the mounts and tranny. Whether or not the tranny will hold up depends on which one you have. On a first gen you will have a lot of rewiring to do.

Would it be easier if for example I bought a doner truck like an expo or a ranger?

What year is your truck? That is a big factor. If its a gen II (89-92) you can just replace the whole harness. If its a gen I then it'll be harder. The links i gave you should explain what you'll need on a gen I.
