well about an hour ago, me and my buddy were passing through town and spotted a 84' 4x4 ranger for sale for $400. it looked clean, figure there was some type of problem with it being so cheap. but after talking to the owner, he was just hurting for money. so we took it off his hands in the 10 mins we stop too look at it. it runs, drives, and stops fine. expcet for the pretty loud lifter tapping and the middle cylinder not firing on the left of the motor (not sure of 2.8 firing order, sorry). so my question is, could the valves out of adjustment cause a dead cylinder??

yeah, its the 2.8. you need to adjust the valves to the proper valve lash. i just found a thread on adjusting them.

being too loose or too tight can kill a cylinder. Just pull covers off and ajust them. Super easy.. a little time consuming.
