2.8 front crank seal

Does anybody know if the 2.8 front crank seal can be replaced with the timing cover on. Thanks

Yes. Ford makes two tools that make it very easy after you get the dampener off- and they make tools for removing and replacing that, too. One tool has 'threads' that dig into the old seal, and the other tool seats the seal just right. (Check e-bay; the tools ar4e getting cheaper as these engines age)
I never tried it with make-shift tools, but it might be done.

I just used a damper puller and two sheet metal screws. Pull the crank pully and screw the seal in about three threads and carefully pry side to side out with a pair of vise grips. The slowly tap the new seal in being careful not to bend the seal I use the back of a large socket on the seal until it is good and flush all the way around.

1 inch zip screws like this and you can use a 1/4 inch socket to drive them in

Thanks guys for the quick replies that helps a lot just was not sure if the cover had to be off.

Look close at the seal surface on the pully if it has a deep groove in it dont press the new seal all the way in, leave it out about 1/32 of an inch and good and square and clean the seal surface of the pully good with steel wool and 400 grit emery cloth.

Don't use a Timken it won't fit. It slides right inside the cover. Rock auto or CarQuest sells a National brand.
