Looking for some info on the 2.3s that came in the rangers, As im trying to take my blowed up crawler to more daily status, So how's these things do? Looking at running a 31" tire.Allso will any other transfer case interchange? i have a few for 2.9 3.0 and 4.0s. local yard has a 4x4 2.3 but no t case.

The transfer case for the 2.3 Rangers is the same as the rest of them... if you are running 31's you need at least 4.10 gears, I ran that setup for quite a while and a little lower would have been nice, but it was very workable

Not sure if it would be a good swap by the numbers
1987 BII 4x4 with 2.9l shows 18/20 MPG: 140HP, 180torque
1987 Ranger 4x4 with 2.3l shows 21/23 MPG:80HP, 106torque

Giving up a lot of HP and torque for not much on MPG.

Yes, transfer cases were the same, good read here: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/TransferCases.shtml
2.3l lima also had unique bell housing/block bolt pattern
