i would try for the mazda engine 01 or newer if you can.


obd2 has tuning advantages
 
If you are in CA, the state, you'll have to pass CARB review and SMOG tests(annually).

The easiest, almost bolt-in, is a Turbo T-bird along with transmission.

An OBD-II 2.3 from 2000+ would need to interface a turbo to an EFI system. Good luck with that.

You could also use a 2.3 from a SVO Mustang. Powerful enough to scare you(me, anyway). Again, an almost-bolt-in situation.
Either of the above might pass SMOG tests. I don't live in California any more, so can't say how difficult it is these days.
