Hey guys i drive a 92 ranger 2.3 turbo. ( 86 TC setup). The truck is my daily driver and i love it. But if hammer on it real hard it wants to flutter out the exhaust almost like a lot of mini backfires. There is a major lose in power. I know it runs rich because it will after fire from time to time when you go to shift. I posted about the problem a while ago but no luck. Since then i have realized that it only does it bad on cool or cold days....if it's hot out it's not near as bad or as often. The engine does have a over sized cam in it that i got used and i did not know the specs. But if it was the cam timing the air temp should not change the problem. Any help will be appreciated. ( I was thinking VAM or fuel injector....?)

One more thing when i did the swap i never took the time to hook up the check engine light. does any one know what wire in the 86 wiring harness and (about were i would find it) that i need to hook up. because you cant get a reading off of those system unless you complete the secret with a bulb.

Sounds like the knock sensor is pulling timing. It pulls timing back pretty far and it makes it flutter. The whole air temp thing sounds a little backwards, but knock sensor is my guess.

I thought about that...I'll unplug it and see what happens. Today i made it do it and i think it's a RPM thing. It seem like it happens at about the same RPM every time. I don't have a tach but feels like about 5,000 then it starts the popping and fluttering out the exhaust. I'll agree the temp thing is strange.

Well this morning i unplugged the knock sensor and the truck ran great. I listened for detonation and did not hear any. I'm running 93 octane and only 10 psi so i should be fine but what do you think about running with the knock senor unplugged? Another question do you think that knock sensor could be going bad. I'm going to see how it runs tonight when i go to work....i really hope that's all it was.

Leave it unhooked. If you're running 10psi and 93octane you'll be fine.

Just listen for detonation..

I left it unhooked today and it ran great. tomorrow I'm going to plug it back in and see if the problem starts again. If it does then I'll know that's what it was.
