i want to do a 2.3 turbo conversion to my 1992 ranger. what do i need and is ii easier and cheaper to use a stock block and mod it or do a engine swap with a svo or thunder bird turbo coupe?
i'm in the same boat. It all depends what you want to do with it. I'd say the less expensive way would be a t/c engine BUT even if it's running when you buy it, remember it's a 24 years old engine, if you plan to go high on boost, i'd say tear it down and rebuilt! (that's what i'm doing right now) good luck with your project
to swap the t/c engine, you need: engine, big vam (air meter) harness, la3 ecu, 2.5 3 inch exhaust and a clutch (mix match parts from t/c to ranger) maybe i forgot something.
use the search fonction, with keywords like turbocoupe, svo, etc you will hit lots of good threads from knowleagable people (not like me)
Any factory engine is made to handle the maximum horsepower of that engine, so all metal parts are designed at the least weight possible for the best power to weight ratio.
If you increase the horse power beyond factory spec then you may find a weak point in an engine part.
Drivetrain is also a concern but IMO less so than an engine part.
If its a "better in hock than stock" conversion then I would get a used motor to build up, so you have the stock engine to put back in if a problem does occur.
If you just want more horsepower then I would look at buying another Ranger that has a bigger engine, and is setup to handle that power.
