2.3 running rough in 4th and 5th

my ranger runs great at idle but if i take off up the road its sputters a little bit when i shift up till i got into 4th then its runs rough all the time and its does the same in 5th and will not go any faster than about 60 if i work at it what could my problem be.

possible clogged cat, notice a nasty smell after driving for a while

ya it smells like something is burning or has burnt when i got the truck i had to clean a rats nest out of the intake there could be something of the same sort in the exhaust it seems strange its not all the time i drove it tonight and the top speed was about 65 seems like there should be more power than that

I have a new MAF ,fuel filter as well as beat the Cat out of my truck and its still spitting and sputtering does any one have any more ideas as to what my problem may be
