2.3 L into 1971 VW single cab

Another pic-
It looks so snug in there. There is going to be one hurdle to get over. The water pump pulley sticks out a little in the back. We'll have to "change" the deck lid. Can you say
"cut, weld, drive"?

Too late thinking about it I am afraid...

There are several people out there in the turbo world who make rotated upper intakes, and that often lowers the hood clearance. You could gain some ground clearance...

Ground clearance is not an issue. However, it looks like I'm going to have to fab up something for the back. There's no room to move the engine forward to make the water pump pulley clear the original deck lid.
Oh well, you always have something to slow you down with these things!

this is astronomically awesome, im not a huge lima fan when they're in rangers but this is cool on too many levels.

Thanks ES894X4! It's finally coming together fairly quick.

Today, I pulled the motor and transmission back out and apart. We got to talking about the stock clutch and how it might not be strong enough and might wear out quick. My friend just happened to have a stage2 pressure plate and I had the disk goes with it.
I got it put in and did some water hose routing.
I was putting in a new clutch cable when I realized it was getting late.
Tomorrow will be another long day. I should have the engine and tranny in for the last time.

Don't forget to (at least) call your mom tomorrow!

I've been working a couple of hours a night on this. I couldn't load any pics to my photobucket so I didn't report. Finally, it worked so here's some more progress.
I mad many trips to the parts place to get radiator hoses I thought would work. Some did.
We made our own pipes out of some 1 1/2" pipes. Welded a bead around the ends to keep the hoses from slipping off.

Here's some pipes I ran over the transaxle

Here's a bracket to hold the filler and cap
pictures1035.jpg

Here's the Jeg's filler pipe. It's located at the highest point in the system

Here's the throttle cable bracket my friend made also, just the other side of it is a gold looking thing with a black rubber thing on top of it. That's another valve to relieve air from the system.
I'm also going to have an overflow tank. It's not in there yet.

This has been a lot of fun! I've learned a lot from my friend and hope to be able to use the knowledge!
More to come....

Looking very good Mike...

Are you fabing up a stout breather for it? That would be cool to run a short air intake down to the body panel or some where...put a scoop on the rear fender...lol...

You could use one of the rectangular air filters from a later model Ranger and get plenty of air flow...which I think you will need...

Hey Mark, I'm just trying to get back on the road right now. I'm the kind of guy that can't leave things alone, though.
I'm thinking a cold air intake is in the future. Also, a roller cam when I find it. I did find a d-port intake still on the Mustang in the local junk yard. I really want to go get the head and intake! I could use it on the other engine (2.0 L). I'm thinking of putting it in my Alfa Romeo. See, i just can't leave well enough alone!

Definitely has an eye for detail and Fabrication!:icon_welder:

Yes, he does!

Update- we got it all wired and tried to start it yesterday... :icon_thumby:
Man it sucks when you're ready and your battery isn't!
Man, it sucks when the machine shop doesn't fit the right oil galley plugs in the block (oil on the floor).
Man, it sucks when you have to take the timing belt and everything that goes with it to get at those plugs.
Man, it sucks when you forgot to hook up the fuel pump :dunno:
Also, I found out I have to take the alternator AND bracket off to get the battery out! I WILL put a new battery on the other side of the engine compartment (when I need another one).

Makes me feel like this  - and I haven't had a beer in a year and a half!

It's alive.. !!!!!

Runs very good .. just needs the pipe and muffler installed.... :headbang:
