2.3 engine question

Anyone know why the Ranger 2.3 uses a clutch fan and not electric like most vehicle's do?

Probably for the added cooling capacity. They don’t have a huge grille opening.

Its certainly the less expensive way to go, not that a car maker would look at that over better function.......................lol.

I would like to see electric fans and water pumps on all engines, and BOTH stay on after engine is shut off, until temp comes down
Most don't think about it but when you shut off a hot engine it gets even hotter because circulation of air and coolant ends instantly
30 to 60seconds of cooling after shut down would, IMO, be much better for long term engine life

And of course the boost in HP wouldn't hurt either

Given that efans are pretty much on everything now I kinda suspect the Ranger has a clutch fan because it needs it. A mechanical fan can move a lot more air (and thus cool better) than an efan.

We were surprised to see the clutch fan boss on the water pump when they revealed the truck.

When my friend Steve Turner and I drove one in California, he pointed the fan out to me.

According to Steve:

Ford engineers beefed up the 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine that we know and love from the Mustang with a variety of upgrades. Most obvious of those changes is a revised front-end accessory drive designed to drive a mechanical cooling fan which was deemed necessary for effective cooling in this broad-reaching application.

Interesting data point for the clutch fan / e-fan debate. Keep in mind that Ford engineers trucks to be used as trucks, so you'd have to know the design requirements for the cooling system. Most likely it was designed to be abused.

Heat soak is an issue, but there were an awful lot of vehicles made that didn't have e-fans, and from what I can tell my '99 Cougar will only run the fans after shutoff in extreme conditions. Usually it just turns them off with the key, so even when they could easily keep them on a bit (like several older cars I had did), they don't. For the most part the biggest problem I read about was in the early turbo days wen the oil sitting in the turbo bearing would cook off.

Anyway, you could always let the engine run a second or two rather than cutting it off red hot.

not on the 2.3 Duratec,,,,

the water pump is completely seperate from the fan drive
