2.2 diesel engine

anyone know what the 2.2L engine was rated at from the factory ? i put mine on the dyno a few weeks ago as a joke ( a quad went 66hp) i made 47hp and 89ftpounds of tourqe at 3000 rpm...

My Ford shop manual says 59hp@4000rpm, and 90 ft-lb@2500.
Your measured numbers sound just about right.

It's still that good after all these years? Be proud of it!

Anybody know where to find info on NDC bearings?

I bought a set of Clevite mains on EBAY and the box contains NDC's instead.

After MUCH research i found NDC's are made in China, imported by some Florida outfit called YAMATO dash something-or-other near Miami airport. Having grown up in Miami that really wrecked my confidence.

Can't find a cross reference to NDC's anywhere, or even a manufacturer's website, UPDATED SEE BELOW!!!

anybody got experience with them, positive or negative?

NEW INFORMATION since yesterday....

Finally got a call from CLEVITE rep.

Apparently NDC is a legitimate sub-supplier to CLEVITE for some low-popularity bearings like in this rare Japanese diesel used in Ranger 83-84 (and Mazdas).
So to find NDC bearings inside a CLEVITE box is not cause for concern.

TO ANYBODY REBUILDING a 2.2: :
Northern Auto in Sioux City was real helpful in resolving this. They're easy to find on internet, and they have some "new old stock" parts for these engines. They were real helpful - good guys....

I have a 1984 Diesel Ranger with the 2.2 L. Runs great. I liked your video as well. My 16 year old son drives the truck most of the time. Gonna get a Chick Magnet Window Decal for him. Anyone know where to get the Decal?

1984 Ford Ranger 2.2 Diesel engine

My 18 year old son has a 1984 Ford Ranger 2.2 Diesel engine that he has restored. The engine has finally given out. Does anyone know of a junk yard that may have one of these engines in it or any ideas of what we can do?

Thanks.

My son and myself made a compact diesel pulling tractor with his 2.2 diesel, we put on a new 2 in. turbo and an injection pump from a 4bt cummins which flows a lot of fuel, estimates on hp are around 150 to 160 according to our diesel shop. We a looking for a flywheel ring gear if anybody has one for sale.

'86 ranger 2.3l turbo diesel

howdy! having the same issues as you boys, trying to find a book with a clue, about the wiring, any ideas where i can find a decent wiring diagram of the engine controls?
also, just bought a '84 mazda 2200 2.2l diesel, runs mint. the frame looks like its finshed, but the body could be repaired, it has a proper topper on it from new, the box is in suprising shape, i'll be pulling the motor out to fit it in a ranger, the mazda pieces will be up forsale
cheers!

When I had my Ranger up for sale last summer a young guy stopped by to look at it...I saw his Ranger on the side street and asked to have a look at it when he told me he had a diesel...

I was impressed, but I didn't get any pics...the only thing he did say about performance was that it was a dog...they are only rated at 54 HP stock but the mileage is great on them...

I have a 1983 2.2 perkins in mint condition. the motor has just been rebuilt. i would like to find a turbo to put on it.

2.2 swap

Has anyone tried to swap the 2.2 diesel into a 2.9 gas truck? I have to 1983 ranger diesels one with 240,000+...still runs good..and the other with 118,000. Both trucks i got free, one with no title and other the body is rusted aparted. Hoping tommorrow to see if motor mounts line up, from the looks of it they will, but if not, doesnt look hard to make it work.:icon_welder: if anyone else has done this before i would like some info on how difficult it will be. Thanks Wayne

I got my manuals from Ebay. A seller named "Geecoder" frequently lists them.
He had the rare diesel engine overhaul manual too.

Did you get the relay panel for glowplugs from behind right hand kickplate?

I overheated the 2.2L diesel in my 84 ranger and damaged the head. Radiator sprung a leak on the interstate. I couldn't find a good 2.2L Diesel head anywhere. So I had to buy a complete engine and have it shipped. I pulled the head and have a good block left over with injector pump, oil cooler, etc. $450 and anyone can have it FOB Houston. It is the Mazda B2200 version so the oil pan will have to be swapped to fit in a ranger. Everything else appears the same. I'll throw in the damaged, not warped old head so it will be complete. The Mazda version comes with an oil cooler.

Hello, another 2.2Diesel guy here..

I just got my Dad's old '84 delivered to Oregon (from Idaho) the other day and my 15 year old Son and I are having a blast working on it. It runs like a top, except for a breif shudder that is happening on right turns. The motor seems just as strong as when I was 16!

It is the truck I grew up driving..great memories. NO speeding threat here! (which is why my Dad bought it new, and why I want my Son driving it:))

I'll try to post a pic or two here soon. I should have taken some "before" shots, as it was really dirty and the chrome hasn't seen a polishing rag since I was 20! (25 years ago). Quite a lot of fun..

We changed the shocks on it yesterday, in addition to an oil change(just as messy of a job as I remember, but now at least I have a lift to work with!) and new air filter. We detailed the engine bay some, but I need another 6 cans of brakeKleen, haha. That aluminum Valve cover looks just at cool as I remember. The brakes are good, and she rolls down the road straight as ever. I can't get enough of that rattling engine..

Anybody remember where the water drains out of the water separator? Dad says it hasn't drained anythign for 15 years or so, but I'm not even sure if water in fuel is much of an issue any more? I can't find the spout or drain spot..

Also, can anybody tell me if there is any kind of special antifreeze I should use? Should I use some good flushing solution/compound? A very knowledgeable fellow at NAPA told me to check out my antifreeze PH too, as these motors might be a wet sleeve type or conventional type. Which is it? How would I tell?

Cheers and thanks!

Brian
