Hey some questions that I had about the 2.0L inline four in a 1983 ranger

A: how much HP can it take with out working on the bottom end?

B: Are there any DOHC mods for it?

C: How much HP can the transmission take?

Thanks guys

A: These engine are not high HP engines, they are economic engines. If you want power, put a bigger engine in.

B: No, at least I've never seen it. Most peoeple that have these engine either drive them or replace them for a larger one.

C: If you could hook a 302 to it, estimate the tranny's life in mintues before you end you with a pile of metal. Hooking a 4.0 to it could ruin it. Since it is an 83, I assume it has the Toyo Koygo 4 speed tranny.

Yes it is...... I have another Q: Can a 2.3 exhaust system fit on a 2.0L ?

Like the exhuast manifold or just everything else?

You can do the Volvo DOHC head swap on a 2.0 just like the 2.3...but it is expensive...in most cases...and last time I checked the 2.0 was rated around 80HP while the 2.3 was rated (varies) around 90HP...so Fuel injection versions of the engine...as opposed to carburated, have about 10 more HP

Or you can get a Thunderbirds Turboed 2.3 and have more HP.

Well ya I was thinking about buying a turbo kit and was wanting to know if the exhaust would bolt up.....???

Yes...the exhaust bolt pattern is the same on the Ranger 2.0 and 2.3...I have the shorty header from a 93 B2300 on my truck now...

turboing the 2.0...unless you plan to rebuild it with forged pistons...it will take about 5psi of turbo pressure if you do not change the pistons and that will actually provide a good boost to your engine...but they are carbed...and that means changing everything from the electrical system to the head...and a special turbo exhaust...but if you're willing to go through all that...it's a great experience...

Costly is the key word here though...but not as much as buying a new vehicle...I think one guy did it for around $1,000...that's the least expensive I've heard...and that person seemed extremely resourceful...as in getting parts on the cheap or just plain lucking out on a good find...
