1st gen steering shaft

I am wondering if anyone has taken a steering shaft from an Explorer, or a 2nd gen Ranger and used it on a 1st gen Ranger? The first gen Ranger has a different mounting design at the end it connects to the steering wheel shaft, compared to the newer designed shafts.
Only modification to make it fit would be to drill a hole through the steering wheel shaft for the bolt to go through..
Only reason I ask is because I have 2 2nd gen steering shafts in hand, and the 1st gen Rangers are getting harder to find decent parts for here.

my current steering setup is ford/dodge/jeep/chevy......

i like the aerostar setup cut down to fit cause it has nice dampner and great u joints...
