1st Gen rangers have 2 fuel filters??

The canister filter (just after the tank) is not necessary. I got sick of replacing that filter and having problems with the o-ring not sealing, so I got the later model replacement reservoir (with no filter) and haven't had any issues. You could just remove the filter and forget about it.

I'm intersted to know if the later model Rangers that went with a single high pressure pump inside the tank still have the reservoir or not. I would think that it's necessary, but it may have only been installed because of the low pressure pump in the tank.

Not sure.i no longer have it now I'm wondering if I should of kept it or not.i really didn't see the point of having it.if it didn't have a filter in it.i heard people say I need a filter b4 and after high pressure pump.wanted to verify it before I started to redo my fuel system.

I just checked the '89 service manual, and the '89 didn't have the reservoir, but had the high pressure pump in the tank. If I recall correctly the reservoir was only there due to the low pressure pump in the tank. The return line from the regulator went back to the reservoir, which allowed the high pressure pump to recirculate the returning fuel without drawing fuel directly from the tank.
Whether the 2 pump system would work okay without the reservoir, I don't know. But I figure Ford had it there for a reason. Maybe due to extended uphill driving, or sustained high rpm's.

Your saying the return from engine went to reservoir not to tank? hopefully that's not the case. because I'm running the return to tank now not reservoir.we ll see what happens.maybe someone else will chime in and give us there insight

The return from the FPR goes to the reservoir first, so it can be used by the high pressure fuel pump. It continues out of the reservoir back to the tank. That's why there's four connections at the reservoir.

I saw that.i read on another forum that someone eliminated it on his 87 4x4 ranger and it runs fine.he said he did it 13 yrs ago and it was one of ford's bad ideas.

The canister type "fuel filter" is actually a fuel reservoir. Some did have filters but not all. I'm not too sure when they stopped using them, maybe when they went to high pressure in tank pump?
Is that reservoir really needed?or can it be eliminated?

Not sure. My guess would be in normal every day driving there wouldnt be a need. I think it was for low tank fuel sloshing around type scenario.
