1st gen high performance exhaust

I've been looking everywhere online and the choices for aftermarket exhaust are very limited for my 84 2.0l. I've seen the dynomax muffler and tailpipe combo and one other combo but thats it. I'm curious if an exhaust system from a later model would work. What have you guys got on your 1st gen 2.0/2.3?

For that year of truck your probably gonna have to go full custom (most muffler shops can bend and install just about whatever you need/want). On my 84 with the V-8, I had a custom bent system made at the local shop (from the headers back) they bent all the pipe, installed with mufflers I choose (18" Blue Streaks)and dumped it in front of the rear axle. This was back in 2000, and I still havent had any issues with any of it (other than cooking starters from the headers). It would be better to find a reputable shop and not to be afraid to spend a little more. A quality exhaust system, that lasts, will be worth more than saving a few bucks to cheaper stuff. IIRC the only kits I've seen for a truck that age were in the LMC truck magazine, and I'm not sure how "performance" they were.

you might be better served on the 2.0 to do a ranger roller cam upgrade than to do exhaust. opening up the exhaust on a N/A engine might do nothing more than to HURT your torque numbers. Add an adjustable cam gear, and you can fine tune the torque for RPM range.

Or just do the right thing and turbocharge it.

I'm thinking the same thing.

If you have a 2.0L engine, in a truck, and want "performance" the exhaust is probably the very last thing you want to look at.

There are a few things I plan to do, but I'm doing the exhaust for right now. About the roller cam, I've actually looked at the comp cam website and they have a decent size list of cams to choose from for my engine. That's a whole other post lol Anyway, I got the headers off of a later model 2.3 ranger from a junk yard and put them on so I'm just gonna do the rest of the exhaust. I noticed that the dynomax tail pipe was 2 inches but it had mandrel bends but it was about 74 dollars compared to the walker oem pipe for 25. I think im just gonna so with a stock tail pipe, thrush glasspack muffler and intermediate pipe. I need something to go from the int. pipe to the headers (down pipe) but i cant find one. There is actually a cat converter pipe that goes there that wasnt on the truck when i got it. I started thinking that for a butt load of money I can go with a more free flowing system, but I don't think that power would be very noticeable. If I end up going really deep into modifications and bigger system is called for I'll go for it at tax time.

I'd actually love to do a draw through set up. It seems everyone prefers the 2.3 turbo swap.

I have an efi turbo, and very happy with the results as I put down 310HP at the wheels at 5280ft.

the 268H comp cam has about as much lift as you can get without valve guide modification and can be had for fairly cheap. this, and an adjustable cam gear would be my first choice on making some power.
