2011 4.0 auto Ranger 2Dr Ext Sport 34K. Constantly whines in 1st gear - the whine stops when the trans shifts to 2nd. My dealer says that's normal and all Rangers sound like that. I say something is worn and should be replaced.
Can you tell me who is right?

I have seen a fair few 5R55 transmissions that are a bit whiny in 1st gear. How long have you had the truck? If it's new to you I would be inclined to say the noise is normal, if you have had it a while and this is a recent development then of course something has changed and that means it can be fixed.

This is of course without hearing the noise for myself.

On the bright side, if they are wrong you have two more years and 26K more miles on your power train warranty.

Yeah it's new to me - guess I'll quit whining and drive for a while. On another question please - this trans seems to lag / slip when I very gently add throttle to go from a 50 mph coast wanting to add only a few mph - the rpm goes up 400 to 600 then acceleration occurs and the RPM rolls back to about 200 RPM over the coasting RPM. This seems to only happen with very light throttle application. I think the RPM roll back is odd. I think I should see only the minor RPM increase demanded and no roll back. Do you think this is normal?
