1999 Ranger Motor and Trans Swap

Hi this is my first time doing something like this so bear with me. But I have a 99 3.0 Ranger 2WD. The motor(3.0 flex fuel) burns all the oil I put in it and the trans (4r44e) slips. My question is can I swap in a 2003 3.0 motor with a 5r44e trans into my 99, and what would I have to do(or change) to make it work.

Is the 03 flex fuel? There are several things that could cause hiccups.

-If both trucks are flex fuel, then the engine swap is basically a drop in affair. The 03 will have a composite intake manifold, so you can use the stock 99 upper intake manifold, and make no other changes or you can do some minor mods and use the composite upper. That's your call.
- If the 03 engine is not flex fuel, then everything above is still true, but you'll need to put the fuel injectors from the 99 engine into the 03 engine.

Things get tricky with the transmission though. The engine and trans are both controlled by the same computer (the PCM). I don't think your 99 PCM will operate the 03 trans. Putting the 03 PCM into the 99 along with the 03 powertrain would be required, but you'd probably run into issues with the PATS system, and the flex fuel sensor.
