 Hi guys ive been having some issues with the tranny and 4x4 in my truck... i just got the truck and seem to like it but ive been finding more problems because i bought a week ago and was sorta proded into it a little ......

anyways its a 1999 ford ranger.

3.0L auto trans :annoyed: (unknown of model of trans but shifter colum shows 1,2,D,N,R,Park)
has turn switch in dash 4x4 (electronic i guess) and 314000 km...

i dont really like the auto trans but the truck seemed to be a deal so i jumped on it...

to start the trans will jump into reverse like normal but putting into any forward gears doesnt go.... takes sometimes 5 seconds to 30 seconds. seems to be the higher the rpm it likes to jump into and go. We got it home and i looked farther into the truck... I no i should have checked fluids before i bought it but like i said i was pushed into it and had little time on the spot. The temp guage spiked. I shut the truck off and 10 mins later checked coolant.. mid dark brown and darker brown in resovoir jug. Transmission has same coulour fluid on dipstick... My first thought the rad is interchanger fluids from rad coolant to trans fluid. I dont know how long its been doing this but the temp never spiked on the 20 km drive home only when i had it at home testing 4x4. Oppions on what to do for the trans...

Second problem

The 4x4 doesnt seem to work. I dont know much about how they rotate the tires and such but l turn on 4 high light in dash comes on and sometimes i hear a click under seat... On wet grass back wheels spin like a 2wd truck but still moves forward slowly... O i tried 4 low and no clicks or sounds sometimes the light for 4 high goes out but normally stays on and no light for 4 low... and same on the wet grass. I no the light isnt burnt out because when i turn the key on and the lights flash both light up in the bottom right corner...

Any help would be appruciated because i feel that something bad happened to this truck and im just getting into a deep money pit :icon_rofl::icon_rofl:....

O and i would really like to look out for a 5 speed tranny to put in this truck.... I no that all trannys arnt the same for this truck and i no that only 1 standard tranny will work with the 3.0... At least the tech section said that. They never mentioned if the 4x4 or 2wd matters. and which years will work for the 3.0 liter engine

Thanks Dylan

Don't even bother fixing the auto-tragic if you want to do a 5-speed swap. The $$$$ will probably come up around the same.

The trans you are looking for is an M5OD form a 3.0L. The 4x4 and RWD transmissions are slightly different. The output shaft of the RWD trans is shorter, so if you tried to just bolt an extension housing and t-case to it, it won't spline up and you will go no where, fast.

ok so if i want to do the 5 speed swap i need a M5OD.. Which i guess is a 5 speed with over drive right.... Know as for the 4x4 is that 2 different transmissions called an M5OD or is the output shaft a bolt on part????

The trans model number is known as the M5OD-R1, with separate versions for each engine, with each having 2 sub-versions for 2wd and 4wd. The only trans that will fit in your truck is from a 3.0L 4x4 truck.

You can convert a 2wd trans to 4wd, you will need to change the tail housing as well as the output shaft. The housing is cake, BUT the output shaft requires complete dissasembly of the trans since most of the gears and parts are mounted on it. Its not horribly complex, but not easy either, and a complete rebuild kit will run $300, plus $200-300 for the extension and new output shaft. You'll be better off either buying a low-mileage trans, or buy a cheaper higher mileage 4x4 trans and rebuilt it yourself, that way you'll have fresh syncros and input bearings and run like new. I bought a 44k mile trans and the syncros could be in a lot better shape, grrr....

ok thanks alot guys thats sorta what i was looking for... so I need one off of a 3.0L 4x4 truck... any years???? and a rebuild kit, does that come with a new clutch and through bearing?? im not too afraid to try something new and rebuild the transmission...

I saw somewere a step by step procedure of doing this swap but cant seem to find it again... do you know were it is..

Thanks Dylan

I'm fairly sure any year 3.0 trans will bolt-up, not sure if they changed the bellhousings or bolt holes over the years like they did with the other engines. Its best to stick with one built the same year as your truck, less chances to have mismatched parts, or a newer one will work too.

The rebuild kit is only for the parts inside the trans like seals, bearings and syncros. The clutch kit, flywheel, slave cylinder, master cylinder, and fluid line are bought separately.

ok so i have thought about the parts i will have to look for and this is what i have come up with...

1. M50D-R1 transmission - Any 3.0 4wd Ranger
2. clutch pedal assembly
3. Engine PCM ???
4. Transmission wiring harness
5. Clutch kit
6. Flywheel
7. Slave Cylinder
8. Clutch Master Cylinder
9. Clutch hydraulic hose
10. Starter

Ok so can i take any of these parts off of any other rangers or even explorers???? I have a 4.0 liter 4x4 1998 ranger out at the local wreckers that i can get parts off of???
