I am looking at a 1998. Nissan Altima. 2 owner, Auto, 85k miles. Any thoughts of what to look for or known issues would be appreciated

Nothing really. Check for sludge in the top end. If you get lazy with oil changes they can sludge up. They run really hot but the cooling system is more than adequate however that oil can get beat if you leave it in longer than 5k.

It may be only the '01 and up, but check the floorboards under the driver and pass feet. They rot out quick. My '01 rotted out in 5 years even though it was well taken care of. I had to fix 1' x 2' holes on both sides.

Fluid and filters changed consistently. Purchased with 88k. repairs= timing belt @ 100k, Gatorback Serp belt @105k, Shackles and Hangers @ 110k, Autolite Plugs/wires @ 110k, Clutch,PP and Slave @125k

I am confused, Bro!!! You said '2 owner, Auto, 85k miles'. The you say 'Purchased with 88k and then it is up to 100k and then 110k. and then 125k. So...how many miles does is show?? Motor idles good? No clicks or clanks? As long as the electrics are all in working order, brakes a great, trans is shifting great and no noises like muffler leak or motor noise and the car steers great...not to worry. No water leaks and all windows roll up with no interference? It should be a good car.

The "extra" info is about his truck, not the altima. Altimas dont have shackles and leaf spring hangers.

One of my friends used to have 2 of those. Both had the same trans issue. Can't remember exactly what it was, but they slipped bad.

Thanks, guys!!! I did not look at the shackles and leaf springs at all...I was reading about the different miles and trying to figure out what he meant about the miles....my bad!!!!! lol

I have seen that too. It's called not changing the fluids. Happens all the time. People think that shit is good for life.
