i found one some one in my town is selling. it s a 1998 AWD explorer sport 4.0 non sohc. they said they were driving along and it shut off and will not start. The local garage said it needs an "engine"? i am thinking it is timing chain related. if it is totally shot i have a 1994 4.0 explorer will that engine interchange with the 1998 ? thanks for any info!!

I think the 94 is OBDI and the 98 is OBDII. Still might be able to get it to work tho, but probably throw a bunch of codes. Maybe the computer and harness off of the 94 along with the 94 engine would solve most problems- of course, the PCM runs the transmission too, could be tricky. You probably have a good chance of fixing the 98. Might just be the enertia switch, relay, or something simple...

I think he's asking if the bare long block will bolt in place of the bare 98 long block

bingo i am wondering about the long block if not i am finding 98 short blocks pretty cheap
