alright so im gonna go look at a 1998 expo sport this weekend and was hoping to get some advice. Its got the sohc 4.0 with a 5 speed standard. 4x4, and its got 140,000 on it. All leather interior, runs good, looks good. They are looking to get 2,995 for it.

What do you think its worth?

Does anyone know of any reoccurring problems to look for?

Is the 4.0 going to last another 20,000 miles?

i plan on driving this for only a year or two then selling it. Im just getting out of college so i want something nice but not expensive, then in a year or two ill be buying something else when i have a job.

Where in CT are you? I know of an Explorer about the same year with a 5 speed for sale at Guilford Automotive in Guilford.

Is this the one you're looking at?

Sure it's a OHC? My 00' 5 speed sport was an OHV.

The SOHC was first introduced in Explorers in 1997 as an optional engine, the OHV was still the standard engine until about 2001. The 5.0 V8 was also an option starting in 1996. The Ranger didn't get the SOHC till 2001.

Gotcha, wasn't sure if you could get it in a sport or if it only got a OHV until 01' when the body style changed.

yea it is that same one. The one at guilford. I called on it monday and he said it was the sohc motor. Ill be sure to check when i go to look at it. I would like to haggle a bit just to see but i think its a decent deal to begin with.

Im also looking at a 2001 jeep cherokee. Its got the 4.0 with only about 85,000 miles on it. They only want 3,995 for that one. Seems like a really good deal but its a grand more...

Ill probably drive both and make a decision based on the test drives.

im from waterford exbass

Cool I'm in Guilford. I work at the Napa right down the road and we deliver parts to Guilford Auto all the time, even though they owe us about $40k. Sooo...they might try and get every penny from you, cuz they need it lol. The owner (George) is kind of a douche, but Nico, one of the techs there, is pretty cool.

I paid $950 for my rusty old '95 Sport. I beat the hell out of it for 10,000 miles with minimal problems, then sold it and got the Ranger. I would have kept it if it wasn't for all the rust. The whole drivetrain was in very solid shape, and the engine was very strong, but probably needed an intake manifold gasket.

The SOHC 4.0 isn't a bad engine, but I'd rather have the OHV in a truck with some miles on it.

ive read that the sohc cam is pretty good with a few miles. Im gonna go drive it friday, ill let ya know what i think.

anyone here have a sohc 4.0 with a bunch of miles?

Josh, haggle the crap out of them. It will be worth it. SUVs are almost worthless cause of that whole high gas price thing and there are tons of exploders out there on the market. Just look at craigslist and see how many exploders come up in a search as compared to rangers or other types of vehicles. I think you could get it for 2000-2500. Good luck!

yea im hoping to get it for 2500 at the most, if i think its a good deal. I wrote down a bunch of things to look for today when looking at it. Basically electronic stuff that goes out that i dont care much for, but will allow me to haggle. If i could get it for 2000 and mechanically it was good I will def buy it.

ok so i went and drove it today. First impression is its pretty clean, no leather inter. like it said. Its got running boards that are rusting out, no big deal i think ill take those off anyway. He said it needed a wheel bearing, and i heard it while driving so hes fixing that today. One thing i was weary about was that the front end makes a whirring noise while driving. I know my brothers jeep 5.9 with the AWD makes the same noise. I beleive its from the AWD, but just wanted to see if anyone else knows what could be causing it. Its gets faster as i go faster, and its most noticeable when slowing down in neutral. Other than that it runs great, shifts great. Everything works.

Also does anyone know if there is a code on the doorjam that would say its a sohc? I checked quick but didnt know what to look for. Im pretty sure it is the sohc but want to make sure. Ill go research it online too.

Thanks for any help!!

It'll say SOHC right on the plastic cover on the engine, or on the header panel emmissions sticker.
