1997 XLT 4x4 Trouble

Hi Ron,

Okay, will go back and up the ohms!

I did test both wires for voltage using the 20V DC setting on my multimeter, grounding negative lead on dash, and got a zero reading on both wires.

Should I allow myself to hope that I’ve found the bad component?

Thanks hugely again,

Pete

P.S. not sure why I set to 200ohms, must’ve still been thinking 4x4 relay test

OHM Test the switch wires at GEM end and not plugged in to GEM

The Grey/red wire might be the reference Ground so also test it with OHM meter to dash Ground, if its 0 OHMs then thats OK its a reference ground

Hi Ron,

Yep, doing my ohm test at the GEM end of those four wires.

Just heading out now to do some more tests. Will shoot some results your way in a half hour or so.

Is it not conclusive that the switch is bad based on the voltage test on those two wires showing nothing?

Thanks,

Pete

TWO wires for the 4WD switch

There are four coming from the back of mine.. the black and red/blue I am ignoring.. the grey/red and blue/white I am testing at the GEM end..

Yes, that is correct, the other 2 are for the back light bulb, illumination

Okay.. back again..

With ohmmeter set properly to 20,000 I was able to do the checks and got the correct readings for all switch positions (as per the earlier post).

I am still not reading any voltage on my multimeter when I test those two wires?

Any thoughts on that?

Cheers,

Pete

With switch and GEM hooked up, and key on, test for voltage on white/blue wire with meter grounded to dash
Then test grey/red meter still grounded to dash

So it would seem from these tests that the switch is not the issue!! Haha.. I thought we were winning!

Where would you look now?

The 4v wire should change to 3v with switch in 4high, the 2v in 4low

Yes that would mean switch and wiring is OK
