Yep... my turn to replace the transmission shift cable.

1997 Ranger 2WD, 3.0 auto.

The shift cable either broke some tabs off or something let go as it was just drifting inside the metal bracket it supposed to be connected to. The transmission won't shift into park as a result. I've been scouring the net to see if there's a good video on a COMPLETE R&R of the cable, but so far no luck. Most vids I see are about tightening the torx screws under the dash or the shift tube bushings, etc.

I could have rigged up something to keep the cable in place, but as cheap as they are, no point. I want to replace it ONCE and be done right the first time.
So in the meantime - I'm looking for suggestions and procedures on removing the old cable.

Looking at the old cable, I'm assuming the plastic stand-off that's attached to the firewall simply pops out? I don't think it's bolted under the floor mat, but I haven't looked.
How did you guys remove your cable? I'm guessing a long screwdriver or pry bar? I don't care if I break it... the cable is toast anyway. And what about 'under dash'? Any pitfalls there I should be aware of? Oh and yes, I ended up buying a METAL shift indicator cable adjuster/holder. The original plastic one isn't broken (yet), but I wanted the metal one on hand just in case it does. More silly Ford plastic breaks-a-lot POS parts! I've had my fill of them when I did the timing on my 5.4 Triton!

Thanks in advance!
