1997 Ranger windshield wipers don't work through OE switch.

Previous owner hotwired a toggle switch from the battery, into the cab and back out to the wiper motor. Motor (obviously) only works on one speed and the toggle switch just hangs down under the dash.

Any help getting the wipers working through the factory switch? (I have replaced the factory switch to no avail.)

Did you replace the Muli-funtion Switch on column?. If you did then you probably fixed your problem you just need to reattach the OEM wiring to the wiper motor. If you did that there are other problems with the wiring harness.

Yes. Replaced the multi function switch AND reattached the wiring to the motor. Still, no joy.

The windshield washer does work. As do the other functions of the switch. Just no wipers.

What is the 'failure mode' of the GEM? (Is there one on my '97?)

The GEM certainly can be the problem, but I'd suggest checking the connector under the hood for power. You should see power with the switch turned on if you probe the leads. Avoid all the black wires and there should be a red, white, and blue (patriotic) wire that provides power to the various functions. If there is no power there, check the main fuse again in the Power Distribution box and then the one in the door dash panel.

If you have a volt meter or even a test light it will tell you if the motor is getting any power. work backwards from there.
