I replaced the rear end in my son's 97 Ranger. The tag on the rear ends reads: S370F 3 73 75 6L01
I purchased a rear end from a 98 Ranger. The tag on the rear end reads: S386M 3 73 75 8A26.
However, when I put the wheels on they will not fit over the axle hub. After taking the tires back off and measuring the hubs the old rear end was 2.5 inches and the one from the 98 measures 2.75 inches. P.S. I have drum brakes on both rears. Everything I've read said the rears were interchangable. So I'm wondering if anyone else had run into this problem and what you did to fix the problem.

The newer/ 98+ trucks have different hub sizes, otherwise completely compatible.

Do you still have the old axle?
Swap the shafts. It's only 10min more of work past changing the fluid. Which you should do anyway.

Edit... The hardware in the brakes is different too. So you might swap the shafts and the brake backing plates.
