1997 gear shift indicator broken

I have a 1997 automatic ford ranger and the wire in the gear shift indicator snapped. Finding a new one is proving difficult, does anyone know if a 3rd Gen gear shift indicator fit in my 2nd Gen truck? 2004 onwards is readily available, but nobody makes these old guys anymore.

It's just a plastic tube with a string inside correct? Which one broke the plastic tube or the string? I have never tried it, but always thought I could possibly use some shrink wrap tube, slip it over the broken plastic tube, and while holding it together, heat the shrink wrap and let it shrink down and hold the pieces together. Of course I suppose you could thread a new string through the tube if that broke.

Mine broke on my 1980 f150. I could not find one either, but had a 78 Granada in the yard and was able to steal that one and make it work. I had to modify where the string mounted to the steering column tube a little bit, but it worked. So you might have to go junkyarding if you want another one and you can't fix yours.

So, first off, 93-97 is third gen. You have a third gen. Second gen is 89-92 and first gen is 83-88.

95 to something like 08 or so used the same dash. More than likely the shift indicator is the same.

What is broken on yours? I’ve glued the tube back together before (carefully) and I’ve replaced a broken spring before. I’m thinking the string from one of those like cigarette lighter “leash” things (the retractable holders) should work for a replacement string.
